Appendix A: Notation Composer Keyboard Shortcuts

Shortcuts Using Special Keys

Keystroke (Combinations)

ENTER

Viewing or editing the score.

Toggle between Select Mode and Add Mode.

SHIFT+ENTER

Viewing or editing the score.

For some types of objects, open the Properties dialog box.

InsKey

Add Mode for notes.

Add a new note where the red to-be-added RedNoteSprite note is currently shown.

SPACE

Almost any time except when editing text.

Start or stop playback, and stop recording.

SPACE

A lyric is selected.

Advance to the next note or chord to continue adding the next lyric.

CTRL+SPACE

A staff or region has been selected for recording.

Start recording.

ALT+SPACE

You have previously specified section that you want to practice.

Start a practice loop.

PAGEUP

(or PAGEDOWN)

Vertical scrollbars are displayed in Page View or Window View.

Scroll up or down the page by a window's worth. If the page is already at the top (or bottom), advance to the top of the next page (or bottom of the previous page).

SHIFT+PAGEUP

(or SHIFT+PAGEDOWN)

Window View or Page View.

Go to the top of the next (or previous) page.

CTRL+HOME

Window View or Page View.

Go to the beginning of the score.

Shortcuts Using Arrow Keys

Advance the selection to the note above (or below) in the same chord in the same same staff.

Add Mode for notes.

Move the red to-be-added RedNoteSprite note to the next or previous position.

UpArrowKey  or DownArrowKey

Add Mode for notes.

Move the red to-be-added RedNoteSprite note to the next staff pitch position above or below the current one.

CTRL + DownArrowKey, UpArrowKey, RightArrowKey, or LeftArrowKey

Vertical or horizontal scrollbars are displayed along the side of the window.

Scroll the score by a small amount in the window.

SHIFT+UpArrowKey or SHIFT+DownArrowKey

One or more notes selected.

Shift the selected notes to the staff immediately above (or below).

Move the notated and/or performed attack of the notes to the right (or left).

Snap ("quantize") the as-performed attack of the selected notes to their notated locations.

C+UpArrowKey or C+DownArrowKey

Show the velocity vectors (loudness) of notes, using SHIFT+V. Then select three or more notes.

Increase (or decrease) the contrast in loudness between the selected notes.

C+RightArrowKey or C+LeftArrowKey

Show the velocity vectors (loudness) of notes, using SHIFT+V. Then select three or more notes.

Gradually increase (or decrease) the loudness of notes over the range of selection, while preserving the accents of notes. ("C" suggests crescendo.)

D+RightArrowKey or D+LeftArrowKey

One or more notes selected.

Increase (or decrease) the notated and/or performed duration of the selected notes.

E+UpArrowKey or E+DownArrowKey

One or more notes selected.

Raise (or lower) the enharmonic spelling of a note, such as from C# to Db.

F+UpArrowKey or F+DownArrowKey

Page layout view.

Increase (or decrease) the music font size.

L+UpArrowKey or L+DownArrowKey

Show the velocity vectors (loudness) of notes, using SHIFT+V. Then select one or more notes.

Increase (or decrease) the loudness of the selected notes.

Increase (or decrease) the pitch of the selected notes.

Snap ("quantize") the as-performed attack and duration of the selected notes to their notated rhythms. (Use A+DownArrowKey to snap the attack and R+ DownArrowKey to snap the release.)

T+UpArrowKey or T+DownArrowKey

Before or during playback.

Increase (or decrease) the percentage adjustment to the playback tempo.

T+ENTER

Before or during playback.

Reset the tempo adjustment to normal (100%).

V+UpArrowKey or V+DownArrowKey

Before or during playback, with one or more staves selected.

Increase (or decrease) the volume level of the selected staves, or all staves if none are selected, and decrease the volume level of the other staves.

Before or during playback.
