Appendix A: Notation Musician Keyboard Shortcuts

Shortcuts Using Special Keys

Keystroke (Combinations)

Context

Action

ENTER

Viewing or editing the score.

Toggle between Select Mode and Add Mode.

SHIFT+ENTER

Viewing or editing the score.

For some types of objects, open the Properties dialog box.

 

 

 

SPACE

Almost any time except when editing text.

Start or stop playback.

SPACE

A lyric is selected.

Advance to the next note or chord to continue adding the next lyric.

CTRL+SPACE

A staff or region has been selected for recording.

Start recording (only in Composer).

ALT+SPACE

You have previously specified section that you want to practice.

Start a practice loop.

PAGEUP

(or PAGEDOWN)

Vertical scrollbars are displayed in Page View or Window View.

Scroll up or down the page by a window's worth. If the page is already at the top (or bottom), advance to the top of the next page (or bottom of the previous page).

SHIFT+PAGEUP

(or SHIFT+PAGEDOWN)

Window View or Page View.

Go to the top of the next (or previous) page.

CTRL+HOME

Window View or Page View.

Go to the beginning of the score.

CTRL+END

Window View or Page View.

Go to the end of the score.

TAB or SHIFT+TAB

A lyric or chord name is selected.

Advance to the next (or previous) note or chord to continue adding or editing the next lyric or next chord name.

Ctrl + PlusKey  (increase)

or Ctrl + MinusKey (decrease)

(for machines with a NumPad)

OR

CTRL + SHIFT + >  (increase)

CTRL +  < (decrease)

 

One or more lyric or text items are selected, OR one or more notes are selected.

Increase or decrease the font size of the selected text items OR increase or decrease the pitch of selected note(s) by half step.

CTRL+N

Almost any time.

Create new file (only in Composer).

CTRL+O

Almost any time.

Open a file.

CTRL+F4

Almost any time.

Close a file.

CTRL+S

Almost any time.

Save an edited file.

SHIFT+CTRL+S

During or after playback.

Turn off stuck notes.

CTRL+P

Almost any time.

Print the current score or part.
