Boccherini - Sinfonia in C maj, G.523, 1799

This is a movement from the latest symphony transcription I'm working on. It's by Luigi Boccherini, an Italian composer working in Spain -- this one was published in 1799 and so is the most "modern" symphony I've yet attempted. The second movement is nearly 300 measures long and is beginning to push the limits of the Composer program. Certainly cannot export to pdf with it.

I'm posting the .not file for the third movement, "Grave," first. Concurrently producing them in Logic Pro 9 using Garritan Personal Orchestra 4 library, but have a long way to go before publishing the .mp3 files.

On my XP box, using the sound font included with Notation Composer 3, it sounds amazingly good (to me). On the Windows 10 box, not so much -- but the amplifier and speakers there are of the desktop variety, so that's a factor.

I've switched from cc#1 to cc#11 for controlling dynamic levels in GPO4 -- this works well with NC3, I just set cc#7 to 127 and control dynamics with cc#11 and the exported MIDI file is very usable in LP9. (cc#1 is not compatible for dynamics as it controls the mod wheel in NC3 -- per traditional intent of MIDI spec).

Articulation is controlled using MIDI note length -- still evolving, but convincing at times.

It's interesting to see the "chitarra" as an instrument in the orchestra. I think the gut-string guitar of the day would have a hard time being heard above the horns and brass.


I noted also that, at bar 50, the cello line goes from bass clef to tenor clef for three bars. Was that in the original?


Very nicely formatted slurs, by the way. Do you have a particular technique for placing them? I think that many would like to know if you do.


I'm curious as to your feeling that 300 bars is "pushing the limits" of Composer. I have any number of long pieces (up to a half hour in length) and haven't noticed any particular problems associated with length. Have you?

Been at it since 2010. Several are posted in this forum. But the Boccherini is the largest and most modern.

Only horns in this sinfonia, but yeah, it's not a concerto, so I had questions about how to balance the levels. Here's a version on "authentic" instruments, coincidentally posted recently on YouTube:

Yep. And there's another c-clef used that's not in NC's menu, a soprano clef. There's a pointer to a pdf image of the manuscript at the bottom of my original post.

Well, my 2004 XP box only has 2GB memory and a Pentium 4 processor, so that's part of the picture -- the two symptoms I've noticed are 1) slow update on the 300 bar movement when in full score, and 2) inability to export to pdf for even modest-sized scores (even on my 8GB Windows 10 box). Glad to hear you've had success in the half hour range -- encouraging.

By the way, I applaud your take (and accomplishment) on Twain's "Adam and Eve." Longtime Twain fan myself.

I figured out what was going on with the sound on my Windows 10 rig: the soundfont had changed, probably somewhere along the way to NC v 3.1.1. I restored it to TimGM6mb.sf2 and the sounds are much better now.

Found some informative posts on this forum re soundfont in the process.

I've finished data-entry on all four movements and am largely done with proof-reading, so I thought I'd post them (including the latest version of mvt iii, posted earlier). I am at the beginning of audio production using LP and GPO/JABB, so I don't have any mp3's to share yet.

Be warned, mvt ii is over 12 min long at the tempo I've chosen.

dj - at some point I'll post a description of how I handle slurs -- I assure you, it's nothing special.

Here's the score for the two shorter movements -- the other two failed upload for violation of size limit . I've made an effort to adhere to the autograph version linked-to earlier in this thread. One exception is the use of the soprano clef, already noted.
