Volume control driving GPO from MNC

I notice that the volume control is set by the modulation wheel controller in GPO. There is a separate dial (volume knob) calibrated in db but that seems to depend on the Mod wheel having some non-zero value. This means (as far as I can see) that for each GPO instrument there needs to be some value sent from MNC to the GPO to set the Mod Wheel.

This is the first chance I have had to use MNC (or any music software) for a few weeks but I recall finding a controller pulldown that included the mod wheel. Problem is this has to be set and resent at each playing of GPO - which, seems to reset the Mod wheel to zero! Is there perhaps a way for MNC to send some value (64 perhaps) to the Mod wheel at each "play" for each instrument that is to play? Otherwise it is almost impossible to drive GPO in terms of getting the volume levels right.

I think (again from memory) the piano is an exception in GPO and it may be controlled directly using MNC volume curve. (I may well be wrong there).

You are correct that GPO depends heavily on the Mod wheel setting for the dynamics of each instrument. The beauty of it is that those dynamics include not only a change of volume level, but also a change in timbre that would correspond to the live instrument as it's played (or blown) harder or softer. As you've also noticed, the Kontakt Player loves to reset itself to 0, thus causing fits at times for users

The good news is that with Composer, you can easily graph Mod wheel changes for each staff right over top of the score, or set a fixed level, for the entire song (per staff).

If you're using Composer 1.1.7, after you've opened your song, click the Graph button in the palette (check the hover-hints if you're unsure which it is), then click the "Ctl" button that has the red question mark in it. You can then select which controller you'd like to edit (Mod wheel is the first in the list), and then you can either "draw" your Mod wheel curve right over top of the score using your mouse, or you can use the "96" button at the bottom of the palette to enter a fixed number.

If you're using the beta of Composer 2.0 (which is 1.9.8), then you can get to it by clicking on the "GraphOverNotes(tm)" tab. The rest of the procedure is the same.

There is a Composer Pro product that is in development that is planned to support even more features of sound libraries like GPO, such as keyswitching instruments.

You can also search here in the forum for "GPO" and find some other information about using GPO with Composer. I have it, and really enjoy using it.

Hi Sherry,
Just now I'm running 1.1.6 and the controller menu does not appear when I press Cntl - altough I'm sure I've seen that list here somewhere. Maybe I should upgrade to 1.1.7 anyway - I just happened to get this version when I registered.

My apologies - I didn't express it clearly enough. In my procedure above, it's not the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard, but the "Ctl button with the red question mark" in the Graph palette (ie, it's in the palette after you've clicked on the Graph button in the top palette). This will bring up the list of controllers, and you can proceed from there.
