Default No support of Windows 10 S

We at Notation Software will not support Windows 10 S.

Recently Microsoft has announced and now sells Windows 10 S. For details on Windows 10 S please see here.

Microsoft explains on their website:
Windows 10 S is streamlined for security and performance, and works exclusively with apps from the Windows Store.

Of course, we will support the regular Windows versions from Windows XP-SP3, Vista, Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Windows 10 HOME and Windows 10 PRO and any further regular Windows versions. In addition we support Mac OS, Linux Ubuntu and Linux openSuSE.

There are a couple of reasons why we will NOT support Windows 10 S:
  • On Windows 10 S only apps from the Microsoft App Store are allowed
  • Apps on the Microsoft App Store technically need to meet prerequisites which contradict and limit our software capabilities. Those needs contradict to our design.
  • For selling through the Microsoft App Store Microsoft requires a fee of 30% of sales
  • From a tax perespective this store is actually not a store where a customer buys from but it is more a marketplace. Regarding sales tax for certain countries the seller is in charge for submitting sales tax to the authorities in those certain countries. E.g. we at Notation Software would need to submit sales tax and need to make all tax declarations to the Australian government for any sale we would have in Australia from the Microsoft App Store. Today BlueSnap does the tax submission and all paperwork. We sell to customers in more than 150 countries. Doing all that tax declaration by us isn't simply feasible.
With Windows 10 S Microsoft follows a similar philosophy like Apple and Google with their App Stores. To me using Security and Performance as arguments for Windows 10 S is hypocritical. Windows 10 S is to force customers buying from the Microsoft App Store.

This is our decision of today unless Microsoft may change the prerequisites for companies like us joing their app store.

Reinhold
