Unhappy Getting a rest where I shouldn't.

Every time I write piece of music on my piano, record it, and then upload it into Notation Composer it puts a rest just after the time and key signature. How do I remove this so the first note isn't a rest?

Hi,

I assume that you are recording directly on your keyboard and transferring the resulting midi file to Notation Composer.

You'll find that the keyboard recording isn't quite spot-on tight to the metronome -- probably being played just a little bit after the beat.

When Composer interprets the midi file, it sees the empty space at the beginning of the first bar and interprets it as a rest.

You can play around with Composer's automatic rest qunatization under Setup/Transcription Options. Or you can try re-recording your piece and see if you can get a little tighter to the first downbeat.

Or you can use Composer's various "re-measuring" features under the Staff Symbols menu: Move Barlines While Stretching As Notated Durations; Insert Barline to Shift Measure; or Shift Barlines.

The first takes a bit of sussing out; the others are more or less straightforward.

Good luck.

Thanks DJ. To clarify... I use a yamaha DGX-505 to record the music using the record feature and then convert it to midi (all with the piano). Once converted I take the card out put that in my computer and load the midi using Notation Composer. I'll see if your solutions work.

I found a solution To my problem just incase anybody else has the same problem!... Click on Measure tab and pull it down. "Click on Remove (delete) measures...". Then when asked change both values to "1" and click OK. Thanks for the help!

Glad you got it figured out.

You should be aware: the Yamaha machines (I have a DGX 500) only save and read in Midi Format 0, which puts all the midi channels onto one track. Composer will read (and sort out the data for) that kind of file, but doesn't save it, using the more modern Midi Format 1, which writes a separate track for each channel. So, if you work on a file and add tracks to it, you may need to use a third program to re-save it to midi format 0 before taking it back to your DGX, otherwise you may not hear some tracks.

GN1:0 MIDI Converter is one piece of freeware that I use occasionally.
