You can change the layout of bars and spacing in the Layout tab, using the Page Layout icon.

The number of bars per staff is set using the "12345678" icon.

If you have a few bars with squished lyrics, trying adding a couple of spaces (Shift-space) to the beginning and end of each word in the lyrics. That forces some space between them. I do that quite often.
