I have a bit more information now. We knew from his forum posts and personal email that Fred had been having some health issues. It seems that he was not feeling well, and his son was taking him to the doctor when Fred had a heart attack on the way there. Michael took him to the nearest emergency room, but the doctors were unable to revive him. His passing was a shock, as he had maintained that he was going to get past this slow-down regarding his health.
