cut time to 4/4

Any magic trick I can do to change a midi file that is in cut time to 4/4 ? I tried just changing the time signature but that leaves the measures the same and just doubles the tempo.

Hi, Panworks:

You can try using the Rebar tool (Staff Symbols, large right arrow icon) (keystroke: |, that is, vertical bar key).

That lets you re-set barlines manually within the piece and Composer will re-transcribe to fit the notes in your new bars to the time signature you've set.

It's not magic, but it's at least Arthur C. Clarke's "sufficiently advanced technology".

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Actually I think what it sounds like you want to do is "scale" the time.

You can open your file in Notation Composer and click Staff Symbols -> Time Signature -> Scale notes

Attachment 1828

You can then change the notation from eg. quarter notes to half notes, and then change the time signature as you wish.

The caveat is that you will want to do this type of operation first as it is effectively a fresh transcription, which will lose any annotations you've added to the score.

ReBar is an excellent tool if the file is in rubato and you need to adjust the barlines in a non-regular or non-linear fashion.

Enjoy!

Okay, brilliant!

Did not know that was there!

I've only been using Composer since, what, 2002? :o

I tried your method but things do not look right. That first measure should be a pickup note on the last sixteenth of a 4/4 measure (I would think as the cut time version has an eighth note pick up) but it is now on the last sixteenth of the second beat of the first measure So now everything is moved back. Is this where re-barring could help? images attached. Thanks

Hi, Panworks:

Can you post the original midi file and let me play with it a bit, please?

David, thank you for the help. Attached is the midi, a short clip - a work in progress - notice that the first note is a pick up. I could certainly re do the file by hand into 4/4 I just thought if there was an easy way to do it in composer it could save me some time.

Hi, Panworks:

I think the attached .jpg shows what you're looking for.

What you needed was another bar of rest at the beginning, to allow the re-transcription to create a full bar with a pick-up.

I changed the meter to 4/4, then used Staff Symbols/Meter menu/Scale meter and chose 1/4 note on the right and 1/8 on the left.

Hope that helps.

David, Excellent! Of course I needed the extra measure at the beginning in order to get a full 4/4 measure. Thank you for your time and interest.:)
