Instrument voice samples in staff setup

While trying to select a voice for a staff, I found it difficult to choose because I always had to go back to the .not and play it to see what it sounded like. It would be great if there were a check box on the staff setup page that turned off/on the playing of a small sample of a voice/instrument when selected from the list. Better yet, play a sample of the current selection, if one is made, when entering the staff setup dialog.

Hi, Bill:

While the Staff Setup box is open, playing a note or two on your midi controller will let you hear the selected sound.

That would work - if I had a midi controller. I enter all from the computer keyboard.

Hi Bill,

You can use the staff's Setup button (the "sound" icon button of the Staff Controls) to open the Staff Setup dialog for that single staff while playing the file (Solo the staff if you want to hear just that staff) and you can experiment with the instrument sounds while it's playing.

Enjoy :)

:DWorks like a charm! Now, I will dig into the documentation to learn how to loop playback (just to let you know I do use the documentation now and then;)).

Hi, Bill:

As a suggestion, install a software midi keyboard, such as VMPK (http://vmpk.sourceforge.net/). That will let you use your mouse to send note and other information to Composer and do things like audition sounds, easily.

Thank you. I've download the VMPK you suggested. Could you add (a) link(s) here or correct search terms to help on how I configure this to work with Composer. I'm very midi illiterate.

You'll also need to install a virtual midi cable (which is just a piece of software that intercepts and re-directs midi messages inside the computer).

See this thread:

http://www.notation.com/vb-forum/showthread.php?t=3400

Then simply choose your virtual midi cable as the output of your virtual keyboard and set Composer to use that VMC as one of its midi inputs.

Setting up the VMPK is outlined on this page: http://vmpk.sourceforge.net/#MIDI_Connections

Good luck.

David
