Default Using SynthFont for better sounds and lower latency (Musician and Composer)

Hi friends,

As the first followup to the Virtual MIDI Cables video, this video shows you how to install SynthFont (from http://www.synthfont.com/Downloads.html) and use its "MIDI Input" feature with Notation Musician and Notation Composer to have better sounds and decrease the playback and/or recording latency (see below).

Why use soundfonts? If you want better quality instrument sounds than the default GS Wavetable, soundfonts are a great way to go. We have a resource page at http://www.notation.com/Articles-Soundfonts.htm with information about soundfonts. There are many free soundfonts available, as well as for-purchase ones.

Additionally, if you first install the ASIO4ALL driver (free at www.asio4all.com) and use it in SynthFont, then you can also record into Notation Composer virtually latency-free. This means that when you press the key on your keyboard to record or play along, you'll hear the sound at the same instant rather than after some delay (the GS Wavetable has a delay of nearly a half-second).

To watch the video, you can click here. If you prefer to download it to your computer, please use this download link.

Enjoy!
Sherry

Default Re: Using SynthFont for better sounds and lower latency (Musician and Composer)

Hi friends,

I've got some direct links for a few soundfonts if you'd like to download them without going cruising These are all free soundfonts that I've found around the web, and are freely distributable so long as they are left intact, which I have done.

General MIDI (GM) soundfonts. These can be used with SynthFont as the "engine", and you won't need to change the instrument patch grid in order to hear the correct sounds when making instrument assignments for your staves.

Chaos
Taiji
8Mb (a smaller size, and therefore doesn't take as long to download as the other two, but not as nice sounds)

One specialty soundfont - Harmonica

Our Soundfont information page has links to lots of sites with a wide variety of instrument soundfonts.

Enjoy!
Sherry

Hi friends,

Just a note that SynthFont is no longer needed with Composer starting with version 3 because of the internal Notation Software Synth that can load soundfonts. Beginning with version 4, you can see the names in all the banks for any soundfonts that you load.

If you use Musician and want to use a different soundfont than what ships with Musician, you may want to still use a different playback device such as SynthFont.

Enjoy!
