I listen to classical CDs when I exercise. This week, I was listening to Antonin Dvorak's "New World Symphony", and as I listened to the second movement, the Largo, I heard all of the marvelous two-part lines and thought here was a ready made duet for my wife, Cynthia, and me.

William Arms Fisher extracted the first part of this movement and created the popular song, "Goin' Home", so this is kind of along the same line.

The lead line (soprano recorder) is completely Dvorak. I took the liberty of selecting what I considered to be the best, complementary lines/notes to form the alto recorder part.

Dvorak's Symphony was written in Db, and the composer's tempo marking is for a quarter note = 52. You can play it at this tempo, but the conductor on my recording set the tempo at quarter note = 40, which we really like for the mood of the movement.

I am including two versions: one in the original Db; and a second one in C. We played through the Db version several times, and we thought we'd give the key of C a shot. I had to change some of the alto lines up an octave, as transposing to C made an out-of-range low B in places.

I think the overall effect is still good in C, but please feel free to try both versions and make your own decision.

We hope you enjoy this piece.
