Many thanks. As a retired IT person I'm always much happier when someone can explain what is happening even if it doesn't solve the problem. At least there is a logical explanation as to why using upper and lower voices in other pieces has always worked for me before and I know what to look out for in future.

Tenors are always the hardest worked voice (I am one of them): they are the only ones continually challenged to switch between treble clef and bass clef in the same piece - but they do normally get the girl!
