Default Opera with notation composer! Really!

I know I haven't been in for a long time--partly private disasters, but partly this:

http://www.saopera.sa.gov.au/backsta...an-operas.html
"
Finally, in November 2014, State Opera will workshop and present two scenes from a new concert/theatre work based on South Australian aboriginal mythology – with the working title Ngurunderi – Opera on the Lake. With music and text by Tim Fatchen, this work draws upon the mythology surrounding the mouth of the River Murray and the lower lakes and Coorong region.
This work is being developed in collaboration with the Ngurrundjeri people of the lower Murray River and will be presented in sections over the next four to five years, with the eventual aim of a complete performance on the River Murray in 2018/2019. This project involves both indigenous and non-indigenous performers and features original music for orchestra, chorus and soloists."

I should live so long. This had its genesis back in 2009, in Fifty Songs in Ninety Days. So it'll be nearly a decade to completion. It's serious stuff, the eventual production cost won't leave much change out of $1m, going by what opera productions run to. And...it's been Notation Composer from start to finish. Seriously; you too can score just about anything with Notation Composer. There's very little it can't do!

I wish Mark and a couple of the old stagers were still around to

see this happen.

Recordings: eventually, but I dont' know that they'll be publicly available from the workshop in November. The workshop is partly development, but also partly to bring backers in. We're out of the realm of the poor musician/composer in control, here!

I'm also reminded of a quote to the effect that a thermonuclear bomb is the only thing that can destroy more money in a single event than music theatre. Even the workshop with a skeletal cast would have to run to over $10,000, I shudder (not my money)!! (All professional: Conductor, director, narrator, 4 soloists, 8 chorus, string quartet, double bass, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, french horn, trombone, bass drum+cymbals, stage crew, lighting and sound, theatre space, five days workup, two full rehearsals, one invited performance. At times I wake up in a cold sweat and check the scores yet again....)

Bravo, Tim!

Very impressive accomplishment!

I'd love to see a few pages from your score, just to see how you use Composer to handle the task.

Congratulations.

David, yes, I'm slow replying. Here is p17 of the A3 conductor's score. I might end up increasing the font size a tad (it's at 8.5 or 9 pts)

2 male principals, baritones,
1 narrator
2 alto
2 sop
2 tenor
2 bass

INSTRUMENTAL

1 oboe
1 clarinet
1 trombone
1 french horn
Bass drun
Cymbal
2 violins
1 viola
1 cello
1 contrabass

Hi

I hope I have picked up the right music on YouTube. Pleasure to listen to. Yet it is not a mixing of genres, in my view, just because elements from Beethoven’s 5th were used.

Thank you for putting it up. I quite like this style of singing.

AND...updating. Opera is painfully slow to get up and running. But, we're now formally moved into production for an eventual full performance in 2018. And yes, I'm still using Notation Composer as my notation program because it works! (v3.0.2 currently). Anyone want to read up further, it's in the "New Work" segment of State Opera South Australia's 2016 programme, go to page 21-22.

I'm nearly finished the first draft full orchestral/vocal scoring, should be done by Christmas. Did I mention I've scored a musical in the interim? www.blindspots.com.au No takers yet, and we're thinking about a small production mid-2016 before the operatics cut in...
