Default Baroque ornaments

I essentially use Notation Composer for transcribing classical music from sometime quite old sheet music and in the baroque period some ornaments are not always written in the same way as in Notation.

The major difference is the starting note: for example, a eighth note C with a trill will be played D, C, D, C.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornamen..._Baroque_music

Would it be possible to have an option for starting an ornament on the upper note? So far I have been obliged to enter the notes "as played" which far from ideal.

Hi, Dom:

I'm no ornamentation expert, so I'm not sure if this will work in all case BUT:

You should be able to enter the notes as you want them to sound, highlight them and then convert them to the appropriate ornament via the Ornaments toolbar.

If converted, the actual played notes won't change, so you should get both the look and sound that you want.

Give that a try and see if it does what you need.

I also need the older style of trill (for western European music of the early classical era and prior) that starts on the note a diatonic step above the notated one. Tried your suggestion and NotationComposer picks the upper note to notate the trill. That is, for the pralltriller example D, C, D, C that domdom mentioned, NC puts the ornament on the D when it is needed on the C.

Walt

Hi, Walt:

Yeah, I see the problem with that.

Possible case for a hidden staff with the performed notes on it and a "print" staff with the ornamentation symbol on it (but with the velocity of the ornamented notes set to 1 so they don't sound.)

Just a work-around, of course.

Hi guys,

This is on the "wish list" but honestly this is only the second time that I can ever recall that this has been asked for, which unfortunately doesn't give it a very high priority for getting done soon.

David's suggestion of having a hidden "performance" track is a good one. You could do that, with the as-performed notes on that staff. On the "score" staff you would have the correctly-notated note, above which you could use Text/Free Text and then use the Mixed Text feature to add the ornament symbol over the note.

Doing this would allow you to have the correct notation for print-out, while having the proper performance of the ornament.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but there is a way

ttfn,
Sherry
