The problem is both the first note and the volume zero setting are after the repeat, which Composer puts at time 0:00:000.

You might put a pickup bar as bar 1, with your volume zero setting in the pickup bar. Make sure the volume zero setting stays in the pickup bar. I just tried this and it works. It looks a trifle strange, but ...
