Hi,

This is the first request for this that I recall - usually it's folks asking for the other way around (collapsing ties ).

There is not currently not a "default" that you can set to have such tied splits happen automatically all the time. You can enter the two splits that you want (eg. two quarter notes) and then add a tie to them using the Note/Ties palette tool.
