I'm ploughing my way through Gary Garritan's interactive version of the ultimate orchestration text, Rimsky Korsakoff's "Principles of Orchestration". I have to say, GG's interactive version is an amazing almost mind-blowing effort. It's all there, it's all illustrated both visually and aurally, it's a must for ease of getting to grips with how individual instruments work/sound, how they fit in ensemble, how they fit in orchestra etc.

(I'm having to pick up my musicianship AND my samples AND my arrangements generally AND my string/brass/wood orchestrations specifically as I'm trying to get back into professional writing. No one said it would be easy...)

Seriously, anybody can benefit from at least dipping into this course. it's currently available and it's free. I'd be willing to buy it if they charged for it.
