Hello Folk,

Sherry is out of commission for a while. Last Friday night there was a fire at her house. She and her family are all fine, and are handling the stress well. It was scary for the children, but Sherry says they are bouncing back well.

The fire started in and destroyed her garage, and spread into part of the house, particularly the kitchen, before the fire fighters put it out.

Sherry's family is now staying in a hotel because the insurance company claimed her house uninhabitable due to smoke damage.

There were fortunately few sentimental loses in the fire. Sherry's workshop and all of the family's musical instruments were not touched by the fire.

I called Sherry earlier today to pass along the concerns some of your expressed in another thread, which was buried in this forum. I'll pass along concerns from those of you who didn't see that post.

When Sherry was talking about this, she was her usual calm self, like this was just another problem that needed to be fixed.

Cheers

Hey'a guys,

So sorry to hear about Sherry. I'm new here and don't know her. But it's obvious from your posts that she is a well loved and respected member of this forum. Please also pass on my sympathies, and I pray God would give her beauty for ashes!

Cheers,

p.s. Thought I'd better post it here since this is especially for Sherry.

Hello Mark,

I missed the bad message in "the other thread".

Please also pass my sympathies to Sherry.

Good to hear no sentimental belongings are lost, but though experiencing a fire in your house causes often concern and emotions about yourself and family's safety.

I really hope for her and her family that her house is quickly restored and she can go back and pick up normal live.

Cheers Jaap

Hi, all:

For when you catch up on this, Sherry: we're so sorry for your troubles. Life's like that sometimes but no one was hurt.

It seems to be going around: I lost my van last week to fire.

I hope you're back with us soon.

David

Howdy, I'm at the hotel

Howdy,

I'm at the hotel's "business center" so I can at least keep an eye on you guys if only briefly ;)

Thanks so much for all the prayers and such for us - we really appreciate it! Things could have been so much worse - God is good. My daughter Mahala was woken by the light from the fire, and came and woke me up. We immediately woke everyone else (it was about 3:30 a.m.), they followed the drill, went right downstairs and out the front door away from the fire, so we were all out in a little over a minute. The house is stone (the garage was wood frame), and that plus the fire door and the fire-retardant wall board really saved the house. Had it been a frame house, we probably wouldn't have made it out.

Our garage with both vehicles, bikes, Christmas decorations, tools, freezers, etc. is all toast. The Christmas decorations will be the hardest - a lot were handmade or special gifts. But we have good memories of those http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif My nice huge kitchen is an absolute huge mess - some fire, and a lot of water damage. We had our own ice skating rink in there Saturday afternoon http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif We did lose the kids' computer and MIDI keyboard, but I'm pretty sure all other instruments are ok, if a little smokey. So I guess I'll get to incorporate all those little changes I should have made the first time around to the kitchen ;)

I've been at the house this morning starting cleanup with the crew. I think we'll have all the bedrooms and upstairs rooms done today, but the real challenge is going to be downstairs, where most of the smoke and soot are. We've had some warmer weather lately, and my thoughts had been turning to spring cleaning, but I wasn't planning on it being this thorough, and with a crew helping http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

Folks have been great helping out with kids and loaner vehicles (both ours were totalled) and just in general being great friends. We are blessed http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif)

I'll keep folks posted as I can, but it will probably be sporadic for a while here. I have to get in touch with our ISP and make some kind of arrangements for getting internet again. Our dish had been mounted..... on top of the garage http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

Hi Sherry,

I'm very concerned at what has happened, but it's great to hear that things are getting better. I haven't had a chance to get on the forum for a while, so I just found out... I can imagine how hard the loss is, but it is great to have friends like that who are a blessing in troubled times. Well, I'm praying for you and yours too, and hoping that everything will be back to normal for you as soon as possible.

Hello All,

Here's an encouraging report from Sherry the other day (which I thought I had posted but apparently didn't finish).

<!-quote-!>quote:

I'm emailing from my personal account from here at the hotel. I just got in touch with our ISP, and it will be May 11th before they can get someone out to our place to reinstall the internet service...

Anyway, we're hoping to get back in to the house next week. We've been blessed with lots of friends who are helping out with the kids, and I've been at the house a lot cleaning (with the crew) and pulling out things we want to save and documenting things we can't...

Everything is going as well as can be expected, and I've been very impressed so far with our insurance company as represented by our agent and our claims adjustor. All in all, we're very blessed http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif<!-/quote-!>

So, for all of us, the bad news is that Sherry will be pretty much out of touch for the next four weeks. It just won't be the same here in the forum without Sherry. But I'll try to fill in for her. I won't have any good stories about the bass guitar, though.

Cheers

Howdy folks, Thanks so much

Howdy folks,

Thanks so much for all the prayers and good thoughts - we are blessed indeed http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif We also greatly appreciate those of you who made inquiries and donated to help replace our vehicles. You have no idea what a blessing that is, as the car insurance didn't give us very much at all because of the age of the vehicles.

We have been able to purchase two - one for $1 http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif That one was a "beater" Honda Civic that one of Bill's work buddies was about to junk - he told Bill he'd sell it to him for $1 so he'd have something to get him to work and back without renting, and to take the pressure off for having to replace that one so soon. We put new tires on it, and had a bit of work done on it, and it's livable as a work-commuter vehicle.

The other vehicle is a minivan - a Honda Odyssey. Bill had done a lot of research on reliability and all (he's a materials engineer for an automotive company), and found that these had a fantastic record (it's used). They're really expensive up here, and frowned upon further south from us (we live in Michigan, home of The Motor City). So we were following a lot of them on eBay Motors, and this one came up with a "buy it now" price that was lower than a lot of the lower level models were going for in open-ended auctions. We looked up all the info on it, and it came up clean, so we went for it. It's located in Cleveland, Ohio (about a 6 hour drive from here), so we have to go get it. My Mom has been up helping us out during our "out of home" experience, so when she heads home to North Carolina on Monday, Bill is going to ride with her and she'll drop him off at the dealership to pick it up.

We have the rest of the house all cleaned up now, and they've started removing debris from the porch and kitchen. They can't start on the garage area yet because the independent investigator who came out found a suspicious "arcing track" about 6 inches from the kennel heater unit, which suggests it may have been the cause of the fire, and they may pursue the manufacturer for the costs associated with our reconstruction and replacement. So we're getting started, but I'd love for them to be able to get all that stuff out (including the Molten Metal Sculptures aka dead cars) so the smell will go away. But we'll just have to be a little more patient http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

So today we're moving back home, after two weeks exactly in the hotel. We're happy to be doing that, and the guys who started cleaning out debris yesterday are fast - if the rest of the contractor's group moves like that, we should have the kitchen and porch rebuilt quite quickly, weather permitting. We're really thankful to be going home. The very small downside, relatively speaking, is that we won't have internet service at home til May 11, so I'll be even more sporadic in my communication here.

On the upside, though, it will be like Christmas quite often. The crew that came through and helped clean didn't necessarily put everything back like it was, so we'll be getting surprises finding things http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

ttfn,
Sherry
