Problems recording MIDI

Hi friends,

Occasionally we'll get a report from someone who is having problems recording MIDI. If you aren't getting any kind of input (recording) signal at all in Setup/Quick MIDI Devices Setup, one of the first things to do is to check your cable. If you have a USB cable, it's pretty straightforward, but if you have MIDI In/Out via an interface, often the problem is just a switched In or Out MIDI cable. Switching those and then testing the recording often fixes the problem (the labeling of the In and Out is not always consistent, but at least it's an easy fix!)

If that is not the issue, one way we've suggested to users that they can easily check to see if the MIDI signal is actually making it into the computer is to use a very simple application called "Red Dot Forever." It's only function in life is to record MIDI input to your computer, and it's available for free at http://sourceforge.net/projects/reddot/files/Red Dot Forever/Version 1.04/
Just download the ".exe" file, install it, and try recording with it. If you can't record with that, then there's probably a problem with the cable, interface, or setting on your MIDI instrument.

If you're having a problem recording, try running this test. Knowing the result from that will help us to figure out the problem you're encountering more quickly.

Thanks!
Sherry

Re: Problems recording MIDI

I have long had only two music-related icons sitting on my desktop: Notation Composer and MidiOx.

Red Dot Forever now sits beside them. Brilliantly simple!
