No playback sound

I have downloaded the Notation player and when I play the score there is no sound. I have tested playing midi files with VLC and indeed they are played ok. They can be played OK from Sibelius as well.

I am using focusrite saffire pro 24 sound card.

I have tested all available playback devices [Microsoft GW Wavetable SW synth / Pro 24 Midi] but still no luck.

Hi, nosound:

I don't actually have the Player on my computer at the moment, but its setup is the same as its big-brother programs (Musician and Composer).

First, did you re-boot after installing the Notation Player? That way, you can be sure that Player is looking for the installed midi devices.

Once you've done that, run Player and look at the Setup Menu and select Midi Devices Configuration (keystroke: qdc). For each port installed on the system, you should see a listing that looks like:

In Out (Ex) (In)ternal Device Whatever the name of your device is

In Out (Ex) (In)ternal Device Whatever the name of your device is

Click on the lower (not bold print) listing and choose Test from the menu list above. A short file of quarter notes will appear and play through. If it plays, right click on the device listing and choose "Set as default playback device." and you're laughing.

If it doesn't play, right click again, choose Properties and make sure that it's selected as an output device.

Notation Software products are quite robust in finding installed Midi devices and I've not seen an instance where problems couldn't be solved.

And Sherry Crann, on the help desk, is very fast and efficient.

Good luck.

David

Re: No playback sound

Yep, I have done all that. In fact this is what is happening. I can get sound only if I plug in speakers/earphones to the soundcard which is connected to the motherboard (not my main, external card), meaning... I need two sets of speakers.

So, what I think is happening here is that the sound signal is sent only to the on-board soundcard outputs and not to the main soundcard outputs. I repeat, this is not an issue with midi playback from programs like Finale or Sibelius, so these programs must do something differently.

Hi,

If you have a dual card setup, it can be tricky, because where you hear the sound (eg. from the on-board card or the second plugged in/external card) can also depend on what MIDI device you choose, and how the audio for that device is routed. FWIW, Notation Software applications use devices that are already on your computer, while Finale and Sibelius are pre-packaged with their own soundsets (and also cost more :) )

I also have an on-board sound chip/card as well as a second sound card that is plugged in a slot. My second card, while really nice for doing audio recording and stuff, is pretty fussy about "exclusive control" issues. I have to make sure that audio routing is set to go to whichever card I want specifically using either my synth's options, or Windows/Sound options when I use audio DAWs or Notation Composer (or other Notation software).

Unfortunately for these cases, the MIDI Device Setup in Notation Player is more limited than it is in Notation Musician and Notation Composer, so the most likely explanation (without seeing your set up) is that Notation Player is (1) using the default GS Wavetable (unless you've selected a different MIDI Device in Setup/Quick MIDI Device Configuration) and that (2) that MIDI device is routed by default through the onboard sound card. You should be able to change the default audio output by using Windows/Control Panel/Sound.

If the above ramble doesn't give you enough info to sort it out, please do let us know what kind of setup you have in regard to (1) sound cards and (2) MIDI devices on your computer. That will (hopefully) help us figure out the solution here.

ttfn,
Sherry
