Huey Smith Piano Style

First posted this transcription I made from the DVD "Dr. John Teaches New Orleans Piano 2" back in May 2009.
I'd welcome hearing from anyone else who plays, transcribes etc. this kind of New Orleans piano music, Ray Charles stuff, country or rock 'n' roll piano - the kind of piano music that accompanies the melody/singer as opposed to following the melody.

Where is the transcription? Am I missing something?

Hi Ralph

Although attached afresh the copy failed to appear.

But you can pick up the original post by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking on "New Orleans Piano" - read the replies before downloading.

Thanks for the guide to the hidden treasure, Peter. Cool! I like the transcription. That had to be quite a bit of work. Good job.

My first exposure to Dr. John was the pop hit, "Right Place, Wrong Time" -- love it! I have a CD of his entitled "Dr. John Duke Elegant', subtitled "Performing the Music of Duke Ellington". If you are not familiar with it, it is on Blue Note with a catalog number of 7243 5 23220 2 2. I would be pretty certain that I picked it up on Amazon. I have to say it is as funky as I've ever heard Ellington played. Love it!

Thanks for the compliment. Good to make contact with a human being - - hits are impersonal and give no idea of who’s out there and what they’re getting out of the post. I first got turned on to this kind of music when I heard Professor Longhair’s “Tipitina” on his “Rock n Roll Gumbo” CD - - an explosion of musical lights and bells and whistles inside my head.

Must admit I am a bit puzzled -- from the number of hits there seems to be a large untapped market for note-for-note transcriptions of certain piano pieces, be they accompaniments, solos, whatever...

Do you transcribe that kind of stuff?

Peter

Re: Huey Smith Piano Style

Peter,

I don't know that I could ever do what you have done with transcription. I'm not even skilled at keyboard. I had some keyboard training way back when (Berklee in the 60s), but essentially I'm a horn man (sax, flute, clarinet). But in retirement, I'm mostly writing and playing Recorder duets with my wife, Cynthia. See:

So, mostly I'm doing reductions, reducing many-voiced familiar songs to two voices, so in a way, I guess that's transcription, but not at your level. It's great to see what you can do, and how to make it available in Notation Software. Keep up the good work!

Ralph
