Howdy,

I have here a "noodling" piece http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif I was noodling around one day with modes (Dorian, to be specific) and trying some different things out on my whistle, just to get a feel for what "vibes" the various modes give, when the main tune for this piece just sort of happened. I recorded it into Composer using my midi keyboard, mostly so I wouldn't forget how it went.

I then added the cello part using the mouse, and later added the harp part. However, I did the last bit using the Pro beta release, so you'll have to use that to check out the file (sorry - it just sort of happened). I didn't do a whole lot of tweaking, but I did clean up the performance a wee bit to make it flow a little better (I'm no keyboardist by any stretch of the imagination).

This is yet another example of my "hack and hone" method of note entry - I have a very ancient Casio keyboard, which has no controllers of any kind, but I can record the rhythms of what I hear in my head and get them into Composer. I can then easily go in and adjust pitches and set any other controllers (volume changes, etc) that I want to for the performance of the piece.

I have put up a recording of the Garritan Personal Orchestra instruments for this piece at my site on SoundClick. I ended up with a stuck note, but it actually fits in and sort of gives a tension to the piece that it wouldn't have had, so I left it in for this recording. I may change it when I figure out the stuck note problem, and if so, I'll re-post here. It's short, but it demonstrates how nice the GPO instruments sound, even unadulterated http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

Howdy,

In case someone wants to look at the file and doesn't have Composer Pro installed, here's the midi file.

celtic mode PRO is pretty good

celtic mode PRO is pretty good. It sounds like Ultima music. http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif Well, maybe because Ultima music was all MIDI and it all sounded medieval.
