Incorrect Metronome Posting

Hi Sherry,

This is really a small nit, but in my recently posted "The Very Thought of You Duet", the metronome shows the tempo as dotted-quarter = 67, whereas it should show quarter = 80.

This appears to be related to the pickup measure which contains three eighth notes. I had set the tempo at 80 prior to restructuring measure 1 to eliminate the extra rests.

I have not tried deleting measure 1 and re-adding it.

Howdy Ralph,

Thanks for reporting the nit :)

The metronome does report using the note duration base of the first measure. To get around that, you can make that first pickup measure a real 4/4 measure, then select the rests and hide them. This gives the cleaner score with just a pick up measure, and keeps the metronome reporting "true" to the rest of the score (which is in 4/4).

Sorry for the inconvenience here.

Sherry

Hi Sherry,

Thanks for your response. I didn't like the extra white space when I tried the "hide rests" option.

Instead, I selected measure 1 and changed the setting to dotted-quarter to 50, which isn't quite mathematically correct (Shouldn't it be 120? At quarter = 80, an eighth would be 40, and 3 eighths would be 120.) At any rate, 120 for one measure is way too fast, and 40 is too slow, so I set the tempo for measure 1 to 50, and it seems to feel right, or at least close.

See the attached.

Did you try "pulling" that first barline over using the Page Layout tools? I thought it looked pretty good after doing that.

Hi Sherry,

I have this feeling that you're going to show me something really neat, but I can't locate it. First, "pulling barlines" gives me no hits in Help. But "page layout tool" does. It sends me to "Preparing a Vocal Part", and there is a link there to "Laying out Pages of a Part", which tells me how to "Move Barlines and Staves".

My problem is I can't move the first barline. The handle is red, and turns blue, but it won't budge to the right. I've tried adding another "first measure", and that lets me move the barline of my original first measure, but it still leaves the white space where my hidden rests are.

Tell me, oh Wizard of Notation, what am I missing?

Hi Ralph,

Don't let anyone fool you - flattery will get you lots of places ;)

In Page Layout, using the "handles" for the barlines, you can move the barline dividing the first and second measures to the left (you can't move the very first barline of the first measure).

Hope this helps. It may not be exactly what you want (and I've written up the problem), but you may learn a new trick anyway :)

Sherry

Thanks, Sherry. That's much nicer than 5-half beats of white space. The 3 pickup notes get a little smooshed together with the barline move, but it is a good alternative.
