Hello, all:

Didn't have time to post this on Christmas Eve, so I'll do it about 2:30 on Christmas Day.

This is the Overture from my adaptation of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, which we recently revamped and mounted here to good reaction.

Merry Christmas.

Howdy David,

Dadgum - I'd just finished my last sip of port about 15 minutes ago (we made an honest to goodness yeasted plum cake for Christmas dessert this year to go with it), and I finished my yearly reading of ACC last week, or it would have been the perfect juxtaposition!

But it was still a lot of fun listening to your piece! It conjured up some excellent mental pictures of Mr. Fezziwig of the winking calves, and small boys singing through key holes. I'll have to add this to my yearly ritual - listen to David's Overture as a prelude to my yearly visitation http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

But I do have my doubts about the electric bass, though I love mine ;)

ttfn,
Sherry

Hello David,

I can hear in this Overture why your musical was received well. It offers a mixture of Charles Dickens old English sort of sound with traditional 20th century musical sound. Wish I could drop in to hear and see a performance of this.

Cheers

Hi David,

I spent the Christmas period this year trying to get a new sound card to work. If I loaded anything but the MS Wavetable Synth, the computer crashed after a few seconds of playback, and MSWT--for some reason I've yet to fathom, on my machine makes virtually any instrument sounds like a caricature of itself. With that card sent back to the factory, I was fortunate enough to get the old 1999 OEM card re-installed.

I played your Overture using one of the hardware synths, and it was more fun than a bowl full of jelly. I particularly like your inclusion of the organ, and the electric bass works for me. The slow strings, however, didn't work as well, so I tried changing pre-set 50 to 49 (the Composer numbers) and they worked for me too.

It would be interesting to see your adaptation of "A Christmas Carol," complete with overture.

all best,
mgj
