Why do we ask for a birth year when you register?

Hi,

The reason that we ask for your birth year when you register is due to The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA). This is a United States federal law which is intended to protect those of age 13 and under when using the internet. As part of the requirements for protecting that age group, the youngster needs a parent's permission to register in any internet community. By having our members give their birth years, we can more readily comply with the law, and provide the parents of these youngsters with the assurance that we are indeed a family-friendly group who are looking out for the interests of their children.
