Notation Composer uses the soundfonts loaded into my Soundblaster X-Fi and imports the .ins files like a charm. I thought I had it made when I created some .ins files using Sequencer's Friend (an older program) to pull the patch names from my sound card's memory. Then, SF stopped working. Composer lets me key in the patch names but I am too lazy to do that. I want a way to extract the names from .sf2 files.
In the fruitless hours I have spent searching for a method, I could have just keyed the dang things one by one.

Ahah! I have found Megafont, which will do the job. It can load in a soundfont .sf2 file and export a Cakewalk .ins file. I can load the soundfont into the Soundblaster when I am ready to use it. I have to admit that it would be nice to have Composer extract the instrument names from the sf2 itself.

Hi, George:

That sounds very good. Can you give us a URL for the Megafont program?

Composer doesn't currently have direct support for Soundfonts but I know Mark listens very carefully.

To get Megafont:

You have to get to the Editor - The blue icon brings up the tools menu (grey icon). Select editor. You will get 'choose mapping to edit' box.
Type in a name for the folder where the ins file will go. Select 'new mapping' off the files menu. Browse to the .sf2 file and select. Right click on the patches displayed and 'select all', then right click and attach the patches. Then, finally, you can pull down the Export menu and select the Cakewalk ins option. Megafont creates a melodic.ins and a drums.ins within a folder you named at the start, which is within a folder named 'megafont'.
Convoluted. Inconvenient. But, it works.
