Practical Instrument Limits

1 Attachment(s)
The attached file, Instrument Limits.not, is information taken from my class notes from when I attended Berklee School (now College) of Music. It is oriented to jazz/swing/dance band instrumentation. It provides suggestions as to the practical ranges of each of the instruments, playing in section or solo, muted or open. There are many professionals that can easily exceed the upper limits, however, for pleasant sounding ensembles, the ranges are practical. It is meant to be viewed/printed in Page View for easier reading. The final section, "Low Interval Limits", can help you avoid muddy-sounding voicings, as the lower you go with an interval, the more overtones will start running together. I hope you find this information helpful to you in your quest to write better music.
