Type of File

I downloaded a midi drum file just to practice tweaking some things, when I went to save it , it changed to .not file. Is it still a .midi file?? I'm getting a keyboard that will accept midi files only ( in smf 0 Format).

Hi,

The ".not" is the special Notation Software file format that saves all score formatting and free text and such. You can also use File/Export, and export the file as a MIDI Type 1 .mid file. If your keyboard needs a Type 0 format, you can use a small utility such as GN1.0 doing the following (this is from our KnowledgeBase (http://notation.com/helpdesk/admin/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=view)):

You can fairly easy work around this problem by using a free MIDI utility that converts MIDI File Format Type 1 to Type 0, as follows:

1. Download the program named GN1.0 (file name gn1to0.zip)
from http://www.gnmidi.com/gnfreeen.htm

2. Unzip the gn1to0.zip file in a permanent directory
in which you wish to save the program.

3. Run the unzipped program named gn1to0.exe

4. In the GN1to0 program, use the File / Open command to
open the MIDI file that you saved in your MidiNotate or Notation product.

5. Click the '0' button in the toolbar of GN1to0. This will
immediately convert the MIDI file from Format Type 1 to
Format Type 0.

6. Use the File / Save As command to save the newly
converted file.

Sherry I got to this thread from an error message when trying to open a file I had downloaded. The site offers .pdf files of scores and the one I picked was Claire de Lune (too hard for me at the moment, but that is a different story). The published .pdf looks very much like the printed copy that I have been working from, but when I processed the .midi file through GN1to0 and loaded it into (the trial version of) Notation Composer it is barely recognizable. I accepted the suggestion to split to 2 hands. Here is the source of the .midi and .pdf files; http://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=608 Is there some other processing step that I need to go through to get a more "normal" looking score ? At least it got the key signature right, though not the meter.

I have been working from, but when I processed the .midi file through GN1to0 and loaded it into (the trial version of) Notation Composer it is barely recognizable. I accepted the suggestion to split to 2 hands. Here is the source of the .midi and .pdf files; http://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=608 Is there some other processing step that I need to go through to get a more "normal" looking score ? This file is a beautiful performance rendition of the piece, but it was recorded without reference to the MIDI metronome, which is why it looks a mess when transcribed. Fortunately, Notation Composer's ReBar feature can help you get usable sheet music from this file. There is a Tutorial Video (fairly new) that demonstrates how to use the ReBar feature - you can find it at http://www.notation.com/vb-forum/showthread.php?t=4064

Alternatively, you can try finding a different .mid file of the piece that may have been sequenced/recorded according to a metronome, and perhaps tweaked using the Tempo map rather than just freely recording to get a good performance. You can just use a favorite search engine to look for "clair de lune MIDI file", or any of the special search engines on our page at http://www.notation.com/MIDI-Search.php

Thanks for the prompt and detailed reply.
Due to other priorities I haven't been able to get back to this for a week or so, but I think I will take the Re-Bar route this week.
I probably COULD find another midi file, but I will almost certainly stumble upon other midi files that need similar processing, so the learning curve will be worth the investment of time.
Hopefully I can get through this before my trial period expires, which will help my purchasing decision (-:
