View Full Version : Display whole note rather than tied notes

When I write a chord where, for example, the bottom note is 4 beats, and the upper notes are comprised of all eighth notes, the bottom note is displayed as 8 eighth notes tied together. It works, but is far more complex looking than displaying a whole note on the bottom. I can't find any reference in the help section for "combining notes" or whatever it should be called. Help or comments will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Terry,
"Collapsing the tie" :)
Click or click-drag that one tie to select it.
Now click the "Collapse tie" button on the palette.
For most elements in the score, clicking on it will (1) select it and (2) automatically change the palette tools to the ones that apply to the select element.
Enjoy :)

Hi Sherry,
Let's see if this attachment worked: http://www.notation.com/vb-forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1281&stc=1&d=1418517147. It is a piece under construction, but it should be adequate.
A good example is in the first measure, where the bottom note is 3 beats, but 6 eighth notes are tied together. And in the fifth measure, E and G are another example of the same.
Thanks,
Terry

Hi Terry,
Thanks for posting the piece - that is very helpful.
What you actually want in this situation is to use different voices for the held notes vs. the other notes.
Click the tied whole note.
Now in the notes palette, click the "lower voice" button (far right on the palette).
Lather, rinse, repeat ;)
ttfn,
Sherry
