well, as for lyrics, the sound of the lyrics seemed more important to them and they often invented new words to have an elegant way to fit the phrasing. BUT I love the show.
Yes, the version with Linda Ronstadt is the best, and you can tell her I said so.

and...this is a sweet love song if you listen to it with a certain mindset. After all, theatre is about suspending disbelief. I believe it all, don't you?

But was it sweet romance that drew us into Pirates of Penzance?
Maybe...but let us not forget the "trumpet's marshall sound". The opening piano is a little loud, but otherwise, this IS a very loud choral number. Since midi does no real human voices, one tries to be creative and assign instruments to special voices. Darling "Mabel" is assigned a trumpet here. This is also powerful satire for the end of the 19th century.

"With A Little Burglary!" is the title of the tune borrowed by the public for "Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here!"
In fact, this midi file is the Overture to Pirates of Penzance and includes:

The last one mentioned buzzes along around 400 bpm. Joplin warned against playing ragtime too fast. Gilbert and Sullivan have no such warning and are a lark to hear fast. Audiences would scream for encores for performers to sing really fast.
After all, I am the very model of a modern major general.
