Ah, the concept album! The performance art of audio. Any weird idea that comes into the artists' head can be graced with that glorious title. http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

Seriously, at the request of Sherry, here's another piece from my "Gates of the Millenium" concept album, which is a set of pieces that revolve around possible futures, as seen from a time when we stand "at the gates of the millenium".

The piece "Altered Paths" that I posted a long time ago under "Sort of Floyd-ish" and the "I Remember The Setting Sun" acoustic guitar piece I posted under "Why is this in rock?" are both part of it.

Here's another: "Another Dream" with some jazz-rock guitar and some interesting vocal lines. The pad sound I'm actually using is a beautiful one from my Casio CTK-651 that soars eerily into the stratosphere on each note release; I'm afraid that it's unique to Casio, so I've just used a generic pad. For live performance, I've sampled it for use in my archaic Akai samplers. And, a little Rhodes goes a long way.

Howdy David,

Listening to this made me think of (dream of?) sitting in this 50's soda shop that Bill and I used to go to when we'd go visit his sister in California. Only my vision here is that it was sitting in the middle of field of flowers with birds twittering all around. (I think my subconcious was rebelling at the thought of no flowers or birds, or maybe it's just that there are a lot of them twittering outside my window right now http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif ).

This is pensive rock n roll, an interesting combo of musical style and philosophical theme.

Now I'm curious if you used a keyboard or a MIDI guitar pickup to record the guitar solo. I know you've said that these pieces are from a concept album, but knowing you you've probably incorporated them somewhere into a show. Is it so?

ttfn,
Sherry

Hi, Djim and Sherry:

Thanks for the kind words. Djim, I wish that my music could make me more calm when filling out my tax forms, but I don't make near enough from it for that.

Sherry, actually, no, this is not for a show. My original idea for this stuff was for my son's band to perform this summer (yes, they're that good, technically), but the lads have since started writing their own music and are pretty much consumed with that.

Right now, I don't really have a place for this. I need a male and female vocalist to do the final recordings for this, as my voice is a "theatre" baritone, not a rock tenor. When I've done that, maybe I'll create a MySpace site for it and see if anyone bites.

No midi guitar, I'm afraid, although I do play some guitar. A combination of programming and live keyboard playing for the guitar parts.

The entire collection is not so "down" as this one, although these days it's hard to look hard into the future without a considerable degree of pessimism.
