Well, I'm pretty much finished with my techno song. I already posted it as a midi file in the thread of Alternative: Dance Music. Using Crisis General Midi, I made an mp3 of it and posted it on soundclick. You can here it at http://www.soundclick.com/bigdusa. The band name was supposed to be just Big D, but that was already taken... thus the (USA) on the end. Oh well. I'm sure you all will enjoy this better than the midi version, Untitled. The finished work is called "Break Through the Mist". Don't ask me why. http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif I realize the edited version is not perfect, it has a few glitches and dynamics problems. Refer to thread http://www.notation.com/discus/messages/26504/33453.html?1169319254 if you want to.

Howdy Big D,

I just listened to your .mid file using my Chaos soundfont, and then to your mp3 version at your SoundClick site using the Crisis soundfont. You did great job for the recording, even with a little volume wobble. Just tell everyone it was "dynamics of interest, when the mist was swirling" http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

I'm curious where you picked up the Crisis GM font. It definitely sounds like a "techno" soundfont, and really makes a difference to how the music comes off.

My kids are really enjoying listening to it as well - "that's really cool music!" was the comment I just got from my son Tom -I'm listening to your mp3 version as I write this. Josh says "That's groovy music - can we do it again?" http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

Keep up the good work, and I'm (and my kids are) looking forward to hearing more http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

ttfn,
Sherry

http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif You have no idea how great that makes me feel! Oh man, I can't stop grinning... that's the first reaction of that kind I've ever had towards my music. It's delicious, http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif.

I got the soundfont from www.bismutnetwork.com (http://www.bismutnetwork.com). It's over 1.5 gigs of memory, it comes in 9 parts, and takes hours to download. It's advertised (not really) on synthfont.com, the download page. The page mentions it in connection with sf2Patcher, which it turns out I didn't need at all for the files.

I'm so glad you all enjoyed it! Hopefully I can get up my other techno song, Fire and Ice, up on soundclick.com in a while (anywhere from a few days to weeks). Needs a lot of editing still. Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Daniel,

My ability to appreciate the types of music that come and go got stuck at Rock and Roll and the popularization of folk, which lasted a bit longer. To someone your age, that might as well have been in the days when Babylon flourished http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif. However "Break/Mist" does have an interesting and arresting sound. The otherworldly voices and the thumping bass provide a contrast which makes the title seem appropriate as either a phenomenon of nature or a metaphor. The dynamics give the piece emotional content. Sometimes the piano and the voices seem to get drowned by the bass, but I am assuming that is an intended effect--the breaking through. The mp3 recording makes a considerable difference; nicely done.

all best,
mgj

Howdy Big D,

I'm glad we could put a grin on your face - they're good to have http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif
Maybe I should send you a video of the guys dancing to your tune - they're really looking forward to hearing some more.

Did you change the patch numbers of your .not to record the mp3 version, or do the instrument patches for the Crisis gm play those sounds for the original file you posted here? I haven't downloaded the Crisis sf yet, so that's why I'm asking you http://www.notation.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

I don't see "Fire and Ice" listed in my directory of your songs that I have downloaded - have you posted it previously under a different name? Or did I miss it (that can happen)?

You are really showing a breadth of compositional genres - I remember that your first pieces were piano, and now you're doing techno. I'm looking forward to hearing more of your compositions!

ttfn,
Sherry

Ah!!Big D!!What a picture 'Breakthrough' makes..It took me back to Dartmoor in South West England...Your opening set the scene of a misty morning on desolate moorland and then gently brought in a small group of beautiful girls just visible through the swirling fronds of mist, they are dancing, and all are wearing the soft white diaphanous gowns that make them like zephyrs, the repetitive theme, which I like to call circular music is expected here, it keeps coming around and around and the rise and fall of the sound gives impetus to the dancers, gradually they drift back into the mist and fade out of sight, I would have liked the ending to go back to the same sound as the opening, that would have completed the circle for me, this is visual music, I love music that conjures up pictures in my imagination and this did it well, I can well understand why Sherry's kids thought it 'Cool', I'm an old man but I'd agree and say it is the epitome of 'Cool' If I were younger I can see myself 'moving' to it. I go back many years now, this reminds me in a way of Ketelby who was a master of descriptive music, all his music conjured up pictures of what the title indicated. Thanks for those enjoyable few moments when an old man dreamed again............I greatly anticipate more of such music....Well Done!...........

Have a Good one.......TTYL......Derek.
