My Musician trial period has expired - I'm proposing to buy the product as soon as it's released properly, but there still seem to be quite a lot of bugs. I've just downloaded Musician0942trialsetup.exe, but it doesn't reset the trial period - uninstalling doesn't make any difference. I've still got and am using Midinotate 4.0.9. Where do I go from here?

Hello Don,

The Musician0942TrialSetup.exe program is supposed to reset the trial period. (The patch programs don't, but you said you were using Musician0942TrialSetup.) Two other beta testers have reported this problem; but I should have heard from many others by now if the trial period reset did not work at all. I have not been able to determine why the trial period reset would not work on some systems.

I'll study this problem more. For now, the best suggestion I can offer is that perhaps you can continue trying out Musician on another PC.

You mentioned there are a lot of bugs. Have you found that there are: (1) lots of bad bugs, (2) a few bad bugs, (3) lots of minor bugs, or (4) some combination of the first three? If this is an issue mostly that there are a few bad bugs, what are they?

Cheers

Thanks Mark -

I'll do as you say - try it on another machine on our network. I imagine it's dumped something in the registry, which I could probably find if I looked, but your idea is safer.

Since discovering that you really are concerned about bugs (unlike some developers) I'll be happy to list what I find and let you know. To be honest, I can't remember now what they were - I've not been able to use Musician for a few weeks, and I use several other packages as well.

It must be a mammoth task to try and sort out bugs on a whole worldful of quirky computers - I really admire your efforts.

FYI, MidiNotate is the only piece of music software that I've bought immediately on sight - no trial period, no nothing - straight to the wallet for the credit card!

Hello Don,

I'm pleased that you will continue trying out Musician 1.0 on another machine.

Please do let me know what bugs you find, especially those that would make you hestitate to start using the software on a regular basis.

Cheers

Mark & Don,

A suggestion - Make certain that the system is rebooted after uninstalling the old and before starting to install the new. This is needed to insure that the Registry is properly updated, otherwise the installer thinks the old version is still there and doesn't make certain updates to reset the "trial period".

Blessings,
Lee

Hi Mark,

I intended to continue to work with MidiNotate Musician but the 30 days trial period has expired. I tried to buy an upgrade from MidiNotate to MN Musician but this does not work.

What can I do?

Best

Hans

Hello Hans,

If the following standard reply does not answer your question, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Mark (the developer)

---------------

If you are using a beta release of MidiNotate Musician 1.0 or Composer 1.0 and the trial period runs out, you can extend it as follows:

1. If you have a fast Internet connection, skip to step #4.

2. Use Windows Explore to navigate to the directory
\Program Files\MidiNotate\Composer
or
\Program Files\MidiNotate\Musician

3. If you find the file composer.chm, rename it to
composer.chm.bak,
or rename musician.chm to musician.chm.bak

This preserves a copy of the relatively large User's
Guide file on your system so that you don't have
to download it again.

4. Uninstall MidiNotate Composer or Musician using
the Uninstall program in its program directory,
or using the Windows Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs.

5. Restart Windows.

6. Download and install the latest beta release of Composer
or Musician from www.notation.com/MidiNotateBetaRelease.htm

If you have a slow Internet connection, then download the
"small" setup program, which is 4Mb instead of 10.5Mb.
The "large" setup program includes the most recent version
of the User's Guide in Microsoft Help (.chm) file format,
which is accessible via the Help menu in the program.

7. If you renamed the composer.chm or musician.chm file
in step #3, rename it back to its original name.

The trial period for the current beta release will extend to 30 days after the date of teh beta release. Please note that the extended trial period will be less than 30 days, since the trial period is based on the date of the beta release, not the date that you have installed the beta release.

We will continue offering beta releases that reset the trial period until the final release of Musician and Composer.

HI

I really like the software and look forward to having the confidence to buy. At the moment under XP having problems with the "Easy Notes" parts pulling off the bass lines. It seems to work well under WIN2000 though.

Mark I have sent several emails with the midi's that caused problems have you received them?

Cheers

Ray

Hello Ray,

I'd appreciate your sending the MIDI file to me at support@notation.com. Or, attach it here in a forum message, as described in another thread.

Cheers

I've just today upgraded to Musician 2.0.1 from 1.1.7. It works properly, but I notice there are 5 lines of menus at the top. A couple of them seem short enough to be able to fit on the same line. I've tried to move them, but can't. Can it be done?
The current problem is that the menus take up so much screen space, only a couple of lines of piano music can be displayed.
I hope someone can help.
Thanks.

Hello Geoff,

Perhaps Musician should allow the three-level palette to be folded into two rows, but it does not offer that option.

You can save a lot of room by toggling off the View / Show Main Palette option. That will remove the first two higher levels of the three-level palette. These first two higher level paletes offer you a means of navigating to the third lowest level palette. Instead of using your mouse, you can use easy-to-learn Shift+Letter commands, such as Shift+N and Shift+A to navigate to the Note Palette and Accent Palette.

Cheers
