hi mark, i am adding a quarter dotted note by first marking the dot-button and then marking the quarter note button in the menu. then i add this note to a measure. however, composer sometimnes shows a quarter and a eights note with a tie. i guess, whether a dotted or two tied notes are shown depends on the position within the measure. maybe, there are notation rules which i do not know. nevertheless, for begginners in score reading like me it is easier to read dotted notes instead of 2 notes with a tie. is there a possibility to choose how this dotted shall be displayed, i.e. to force composer to show the dot behing the quarter note? regards jörg |

Hello Jörg, Composer uses its best judgement about whether a dotted quarter note should be displayed as such, or a a quarter note tied to an eighth, or an eighth tied to a quarter note. Composer usually will make a better decision than will a musician who hasn't carefully studied music engraving rules. However, Composer does let you override its automatic engraving decisions. In this case, select the tie. Then in the Tie Palette, click the Collapse Tie button. The tied quarter note and eighth note will change to the dotted quarter note that you desire. Cheers -- Mark |

Hi Mark I'm running Composer 1.1.5 (due to your previous support I purchased the prog) and have encountered the same problem of no dotted note. I searched the forum, found this post and was delighted to see you had previously dealt with this problem. I regret that your solution doesn't work in this version. When I delete the tie I'm simply left with an extra note. Regards Tony |

Hello Tony, You probably chose the wrong command. Use the Collapse Tie command rather than Delete Tie command. If the time signature is 4:4, then you might want to change the "beaming pattern". Double-click the first 4:4 meter in the song. In the Change Meter dialog box, change the beaming pattern from 2+2+2+2:8 to 4+4:8. That will fix any dotted quarter note that straddles the first or third beat of a 4:4 measure. I'm planning on changing the beaming pattern from 2+2+2+2:8 to 4+4:8 as the default for 4:4 measure, since this has been a problem for several MidiNotate users. Cheers -- Mark |

Mark Spot on. User error again. Changing the "beaming pattern" immediately 'corrected' some notes (I doubt I would ever have found this) and using Collapse Tie (when I found it)is going to enable me to 'correct' the other notes. I appreciate that Composer got it right first time but as I'm creating lead sheets I prefer dotted notes. Many thanks for your usual speedy and note perfect service. Regards Tony |
