Hi Everyone,
Following is a press release for freemymusic.com , a brand new web site for composers. I happened to find the press release the day it came out. It looks like a great opportunity to have your music heard and you can make some money doing it. I registered on the 15th and initially found the site "difficult" to navigate. Finally I found out the reason it was difficult was because there were no categories and no songs listed because there were none entered. I understand I was the first to register. Rather than explain the site, I am enclosing the press release below, which will explain it. Since it is brand new, it has a lot of room to grow and I think it probably will. We could vote for each other's songs and help each other out. Here is the release:
Fred Winterling

After more than a year of fine tuning and development, FreeMyMusic.com is ready for the public. The site has consecutive music contests occurring twice a month on the 1st and 16th of every month, and has categories that are created by the musician if they cannot find one that best suits their music style. Not only that, 10%-30% of ALL entries will win, and not by nameless judges, but by the public. The winners are selected from an open voting method by the users of the site. The revenue potential for good musicians that has a following can be massive.

“This will be a substantial source of money for good musicians that people haven’t heard of” says Steven Cho, founder and owner of the site. With multiple entries, and the quick succession of contests, FreeMyMusic.com is sure to be an indispensable tool for musicians. As the tagline of the site says, it’s the best music that you’ve never heard.

Users of the site get 5 votes per contest, and vote for their favorite songs, and votes can be changed anytime during the contest period. This will entice the users to listen to more songs, in turn giving the musicians greater exposure. The financial incentive, as well as the distribution of the music will become essential to musicians. Steven Cho says, “there’s no reason that any musician who’s serious about their craft will not want to enter at least one contest to see how they do. It’s very simple and straight forward.”

Finally, musicians don’t have to go hungry for their art any more. This new method of music distribution and user participation will usher in a new era for new music, and new musicians.

I feel obligated to say here that I do not endorse FreeMyMusic.com. I very much like to see composers share their music. But I do not endorse FreeMyMusic's business of setting composers in competition with each other to share 70% of their entry frees to win contests, where FreeMyMusic gets the other 30%. This is not an intelligent way for composers to get feedback on their works, nor to earn money for their composing effort.

Sincerely,
Mark Walsen

Hi Mark,
Sorry! I should have checked with you first about the press release. It sounded like a good idea to me at the time. I have uploaded a song there and intend to try it out. I will not mention the site in the forum again, since you disagree with it. I respect your opinion. However, I do take some offense at the referrence to my "intelligence".
Fred

Hi Fred,

There's no need for anyone to ask me first about passing on an announcement like this. However, do free to ask my opinion in private email if you'd like my opinion before posting.

My comment about "not intelligent" was intended to describe the idea of FreeMyMusic.com, not you. I apologize for the sloppy wording of that comment.

Cheers
-- Mark

Hello,
I am from FreeMyMusic.com. I respect everyone's opinions in this matter, however, I think that everyone should come to their own conclusion themselves. Some may feel that your type of music will not favor well from this "type" of exposure, while others feel that exposure is exposure, and the contest matrix of the site provides an interesting and potentially profitable method of exposure, and it may be quite entertaining.

If you feel that this site isn't for you, fair enough, but I do welcome anyone else that may find our site interesting. Our site utilizes our visitors to vote for their favorite songs, and we have a very high % of winners. We feel that this approach is much more favorable to the entrant than thousands of people paying a $25 fee, having a bunch of faceless judges selecting the $10,000 grand prize winner.

Nevertheless, for those that wish to try out our site, WELCOME!

I'll reiterate that as the developer of MidiNotate, and administrator of this MidiNotate Community Users Forum, I do not endorse FreeMyMusic.com, based on its current business model.

Sincerely,
Mark Walsen
