Getting Started

Welcome to Notation Software's Support Forum. This Getting Started page provides information that will help you quickly learn how to explore and participate in the forum.

It is not necessary for you to register as a user of this forum in order to view or add messages. The main advantage for registering as a user of this forum is to receive automatic e-mail notifications when posts are made to particular forum topics that you specify, and to be able to quickly find messages that you have previously added to the forum.

This Getting Started page is organized as follows:

Forum Terminology

At the top level, this forum is organized into topics, such as "Your Overall Impressions and How You Use Notation Musician or Composer". These top-level topics are further organized into subtopics that Notation Software has defined to help you quickly find threads (conversations) that match your particular interest.

A thread is a conversation about some specific subject of interest, such as a bug report, how-to question, or request for a new feature in Notation. A thread can be initiated by anyone-- someone here at Notation Software, another user of Notation, or you. A thread is listed in the forum as just another subtopic of some parent topic or subtopic. So, the overall topic/subtopic organization of the forum grows over time as new forum users initiate new threads.

Once a thread has been initiated, you or other forum users and ourselves at Notation Software can add messages to that thread, as explained below.

Reading Discussions (Threads)

Anyone with a connected Internet browser can read threads in this forum. To read threads, navigate to the thread of interest by single clicking on the links from the list of topics and subtopics. You can navigate backwards using the navigation bars at the top of each page.

Contributing to Discussions (Threads)

To contribute a message to a thread already started by someone else, open the list of messages for that threads, and go to the "Add Your Message Here" area at the bottom of the page. Type in the text of your message in the "Post" area.

If you have registered as a forum user with the option to receive notifications of replies to your postings, then enter your username and password in the fields following the "Post" area; do this even if you have logged in with your username and password. If you are not registered as a forum user, you should still enter your name (or some alias that you can remember) so that you can easily find your postings when you later return to the forum.

To start a new thread, navigate to its appropriate topic and subtopic. Please take care to choose a topic and subtopic that most closely relate to the subject matter of your posting. If another thread has already been started on the same exact subject, please add another message to that thread, rather than start a new thread. Whenever you add a new posting to a thread, that thread will be moved to the top of the displayed list within its topic; that assures that your new message will gain high visibility whether you add it to an existing thread or start a new thread.

If you wish to start a new thread in a topic and subtopic, click the "Create New thread" text link at the bottom of the topic page. You will be presented with a Start New Thread page, in which you enter the subject and contents of the new message. Enter your registered username and password, or just your name, as described above for adding another message to an existing thread.
