Just installed MN Composer 1.1.5. It freezes whenever I open any .mid or .not (from MN 4) file. I have to kill it with task manager. This is on a P3-500 running Win2K with all system updates current, 256 MB RAM. I believe that the sound card (original, 1999) is an Ess Maestro 2E PCI AudioDrive (WDM). MN 4 worked fine with it, as do all the audio player programs. I will not have time to do much testing on this over the next few weeks, wanted at least to report it. === P.S. Forgot to add. It also freezes on the sample mid and not files that come with the program. |

Hi, Jonathan: Does it freeze when you try to play or when you try to load the files? If the former, I'd say that you may have a corrupt Mididev.cfg, which should be in your C:/Program Files/Midinotate folder. If you delete the old one (copy it first to Copy of Mididev.cfg or some such, so that you can restore it if all else fails), you can create a new one in Composer, under the Setup/Midi Device Configuration/Config/New menu. That may work for you. I can't remember whether the MN4 .cfg is the same format as the newer products' .cfd files. Good luck. David |

when I load. I never see the score. The filename appears in the title bar but other than that the screen does not change, just freezes hard. |

Hello Jonathan, If you have been running MidiNotate, and install a new version in the same Windows session, it is important to restart Windows. Please try restarting Windows, and this problem is likely to go away. Otherwise, please report back. The next version 1.1.6 of the MidiNotate (Composer, Musician, Player) Setup program will advise the user to restart Windows if he is updating the version of MidiNotate. Cheers -- Mark |

Thanks, Mark. Reboot did it. Now I remember I had an issue like this back with MN version 3, 5 years ago! |

I have been having Composer freeze up on me ever since I installed the Maple virtual MIDI cable on my computer. When I try to un-install the Virtual-MIDI cable from the add+remove programs screen I get a file cannot be found message. Does someone know where I would be able to find the Virtual midi cable file on my computer so that I can un-install it? Thanks |

Hi, Andrew: I use Marble Sound's Maple Midi myself with good results, so it's not an inherent conflict with Composer that's the problem. Maple Midi Tools installs to C:\Program Files\Marble Sound\Maple and you should be able to find it there. There is an uninstall000.exe in my folder, so try that. I think perhaps that you may be having problems with a bad install of the Marblesound stuff. Good luck. David

I just installed the trial version of Notate Composer [trial version 2.2]. All the functions I have tried work fine if I start by loading an existing midi file, but if I try to create a new song it hangs up on the pop-up screens which select the ensemble, time signature etc and I have to kill it with Windows task manager. This is a reasonably able windows xp machine with all updates installed. Just for kicks, I installed the same version on another machine and it worked fine. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, rebooting etc to no avail. It seems something in the differences between the machines must be causing this, but I have no clue what to look for. Any suggestions? I don't want to purchase the sw if I am going to have to worry about issues like this. Thanks, Gary Smith |

Hello Gary, Sue Doe, in another forum thread reported this same problem with the New Song Wizard. This appears to be a new problem, even though version 2.2 has been out for a couple of months. Did you recently (in the last two months) install an update to Windows XP? Sue found a work-around for this New Song Wizard problem. She directly opened the song template .not file, saved it as a new song, and then continued working with it. That's sort of how the New Song Wizard works itself. This is just a work-around, of course. I'd appreciate your letting me know particularly if you did update WIndows XP recently. If you're willing to stick around to further trouble-shoot this, then we'll probably come up with some things for you to try to pin down the problem. It feels to me like there is some sort of file/directory permission problem. Cheers -- Mark |

Hello Gary, P.S. I think I've found the problem. Composer is probably confused about where the c:\Program Files\Notation\Templates directory is, which might happen if the user has manually move the directory, or removed template .not files from that directory, or if the registry entry referring to that entry somehow got messed up. For the upcoming Composer 2.3 release, due within a week, I've added some internal safety precautions in Composer so that it will recover if it finds the template directory information somehow messed up. For more details about this, see my reply to Sue Doe in another thread. CHeers -- Mark |

Hi Mark, Sorry I have been of little help lately with the testing of beta 3. I have been battling a few health issues (dizziness and balance problems) that are still a little annoying, not to mention that I also have a problem with the little finger and ring finger of my left hand...numbness and tingling that may take some time to discover the problem, or may be long lasting. Trying to play the keyboard is like trying to play with two dead fingers, not impossible...but difficult. The little work I have been doing has not turned up any problems so therefore I had nothing to report. I hope to be back up and running again as soon as I learn how to deal with these annoyances. Thanks for your understanding. Cheers, Fred |

Hi Fred, I am sorry to hear about your health problems. Although I am ok so far, I had to neglect my musical activities over the last six month due to time limitations. I am now putting together a Christmas Concert for Margaret, in a great hurry Very best wishes and a speedy recovery Herbert |

Hi Fred, Sorry about the problems. I have both occasionally. The balance thing, I'm told, comes with age, and the doctor's advice to me was, don't jump up quickly as if you [meaning me] were 30 years younger. The numbness, in the same fingers, I have had for at least 25 years. It usually shows up after I've been asleep and can last for a few hours to a couple of days. That I'm told is a pinched nerve, and the way to avoid the ghastly feeling (or lack thereof) is not to stay in a position that will pinch it for long periods of time. Which sounds to me like saying that the answer to heartburn is starvation, but that's all I got. I hope things improve soon. all best, mgj |

Hi MJ, Thank you. My problem has been the last 4-6 months. The problem in the fingers lasts 24-7.,,, without even a second of relief. I'm thinking of sneaking out of the doctors offices and finding a good chiropractor..shhh don't tell the doctors. Cheers, Fred |
