Choral MIDI Song Files

A list of the best web sites hosting MIDI files for choral music.
You can turn any of these files into free sheet music with easy-to-use sheet music software.

The Silvis Woodshed - This very extensive site owned by George Silvis has been developed for the purpose of allowing vocalists to practice at home. The home page is classical, with links at the bottom of the page to a wonderful list of madrigals and a Christmas page. No lyrics are included in this collection.

MIDI for Choirs - This site has music for primarily classical choral works. Choose a musical period or theme near the top of the page to reach the MIDI files. No lyrics are included.

CyberBass - This website is designed for choral practice. Choose 'Music Index' in the menu on the left side of the page. That takes you a list of choral works organized by composer. For a given choral work, click the "Ensemble" link to download the MIDI file. You can also download MIDI files for specific SATB voices for the same work, but there is no need to do that if you are using Notation Musician or Notation Composer.

John's Downloadable MIDI Choral Site - This copious site contains MIDI files of choral works, madrigals, and other Part-music pieces. On this front page, he gives some pointers on using his site. The works are arranged by composer, and you can click the text links near the top of this front page to go to the respective lists of either choral works or madrigals. For the choral works, you will be taken to a page that lists the available works by composer in alphabetical order. Clicking the title of the work takes you to the page where the MIDI files are available. To aid in practice, the files are listed in a grid by which vocal part predominates, and there is an unemphasized version. If you're using a Notation product to download and open these files, you'll only need to download one of the sets of files for a particular work, preferably the unemphasized set, as you can do your own volume adjustments for the vocal parts within Notation. Otherwise, you'll probably need to download each file set for each part you want to hear. If you need to download multiple files, be careful because all files for the same section of each work (each of the vocal part files) have the same name, so either you'll need to rename the different ones something you can remember or you should download each vocal part set into a suitably named vocal part folder. The madrigals are all available from the madrigal composer's page, simply by clicking the file you want.

Free Choral Music - This web site offers choral works (and some traditional works) alphabetically by composer and by song title. To download the MIDI files, just scroll down the page and right click on the MIDI to the right of the song you want. There is also a page on this site that is dedicated to piano and voice.

Choral Archives - This MIDI file site, specializing in choral music, offers a small but varied collection of works by different composers. Note that these files have the extension ".midi", which you will need to change to ".mid" in order for some programs to read the file.

Helpful hint: You can create choral scores or do "live" practice sessions using Notation Musician with these files . Quickly arrange the choral parts for printing, or adjust the volume of individual parts (such as soprano or tenor) for listening and practicing. Try it free for 30 days!
