MidiNotate Composer Update to version 1.1.7

In October, 2004, MidiNotate Composer 1.1 was upgraded to Notation Composer 2.0, at the same time that the first name MidiNotate was changed to Composer.

To find out what version of Composer you are currently using, choose the About command in Composer's Help menu.

If you are using MidiNotate Composer 1.0 or 1.1, then we highly encourage you to upgrade to Notation Composer 2.0 for only $49.95.

However, if you choose to continue using MidiNotate Composer rather than upgrade to Notation Composer 2.0, we advise you to get a free update to the last release, version 1.1.7 of the MidiNotate Composer 1.0 series.

If you have previously installed MidiNotate Composer version 1.1.2 through 1.1.6, either the purchased version or trial version, we recommend that you install a patch to upgrade to version 1.1.7.

If you have previously installed MidiNotate Composer 1.0 through 1.1.1, then no patch is available to update to version 1.1.7, but you can redownload a complete copy of the last version 1.1.7 of MidiNotate Composer at Notation's Redownload Page.

How to upgrade to MidiNotate Composer version 1.1.7 from 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 1.1.4, 1.1.5, or 1.1.6

Minor maintenance releases are provided to you as "patches". A patch is a small program that updates just portion of the software that is changed. The advantage of a patch program is that is small, because the entire copy of the updated software does not need to be downloaded again. In general, you should be cautious using patch programs unless you obtain them from a reputable source, because some virus programs have been misrepresented as patch programs. The patch programs we provide here are safe from viruses, and their sole purpose is to update MidiNotate Composer on your system.

The procedure for downloading and installing an update to Notation Composer is as follows:

  1. Determine which version of MidiNotate Composer you are using by running the program and choosing the About command in the Help menu. The version will be reported there. Also, if you are using the trial version of MidiNotate Composer, "Trial" will be indicated in the Help / About window.

  2. Review the first table below to determine whether you want to upgrade to the current version (free of charge). If the bug fixes are for bugs that are not important to you, and if any listed enhancements to the program are not important to you, then you do not need to install the upgrade.

  3. Find the row in the second table for the current version of MidiNotate Composer that is installed on your system.

  4. Click the Composer...Patch.exe download file name in either the column for "Patch for Purchased Version" or "Patch for Trial Version." That will begin the download of the patch file.

  5. Once the patch file is downloaded, run it. On some versions of Windows, you should click the "Open" button to run the patch. This will start the "EasyPatch Update Wizard".

  6. There are just a few steps in the EasyPatch Update Wizard program. You can select all of the default choices, unless you originally installed MidiNotate Composer in a different directory than the default directory suggested by the Composer setup program. In that case, specify the directory where you originally installed Composer. This is normally the Composer subdirectory of the \Program Files\MidiNotate directory.

Description of Patches

Version Bug fixes and enhancments in patch
1.1.7
  • Built-in Internet Browser. A bug was introduced in version 1.1.6 in which the built-in Internet Browser did not correctly open at the default web page www.notation.com/midifiles.htm.
  • Practice Option. After selecting a region with CTRL+Drag, use the new Practice Selected Region command in the Perform menu, or type CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE, to repeatedly play that section.
  • Deleting Staff. In some unusual conditions, deleting a staff and then undoing that operation could lead to a corrupted MidiNotate .not file.
  • Transcription. In these unusual conditions, a MIDI file might fail to open: it has a meter such as 7:16, where the numerator is not divisible by 2 or 3, and the denominator is 16 or more; and there is a note occupying the last beat of the measure; and the next measure starts with a long note. (MidiNotate incorrectly interpreted this as a grace note, and then had problems.)
1.1.6
  • Transcription Options. A new "Syncopation" rhythm style has been added to the list of "Standard" and "Swing" rhythm styles. You should use the Syncopation rhythm style for precise syncopated rhythms, such as in ragtime or funk music.
  • Playback. (1) If a MIDI file has SysEx commands in it, then on certain devices, such as the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth, playback was disrupted or silenced. (2) If playback is started after a repeat or branch (such as D.S.) in the score, then the repeats were somethings not correctly played.
  • Automatic Engraving. In a 4:4 meter, MidiNotate sometimes inappropriately split a dotted quarter note into a quarter note tied to an eighth note or eighth note tied to a quarter note.
  • Dynamic Marks. There is a new option in the Lines palette and menu to lock a dotted line to the vertical positions of a pair of dynamic marks, such as in "cresc......f". Also, a dynamic mark above the staff is now placed closer to the staff; it was too high.
  • Parts. The Add Part command in the Part menu has been renamed to Extract One Part From One Or More Staves. The new command name better describes the command; the old name was confusing.
  • Prepare Fake Book command and Split Melody and Accompaniment command. These commands failed if the original score had a note that tied across a barline and that note switched voices between single, upper, or lower voice.
  • Merge Staves. If 1-line drum staves were merge, the lines of the resulting 5-line drum staff were missing.
  • Exiting MidiNotate . On some Windows 98SE systems, MidiNotate would display a harmless, but scary "blue screen" upon exiting.
  • Setup. If the Setup program attempted to update MidiNotate after MidiNotate had been previously run, then the next time MidiNotate was run, the music notation might not be correctly displayed or not displayed at all, if all these activities took place in the same Windows session.
1.1.5
  • Playback. If the as-performed note exactly ends at the start of another note with the same pitch in the same track, then the second note might get stuck, that is, continue to play after it is supposed to stop. This bug was introduced in version 1.1.4.
  • Playback. No notes will be heard on the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth if an opened MIDI file includes one or more SysEx events.
  • MIDI File Open. A MIDI file failed to open if it had a meter (time signature) with a denominator of 64 or greater.
1.1.4
  • Easy Notes. The letters (C, D, E, etc.) were not displayed in the noteheads.
  • General User Interface. When you hit the Next Page or Prev Page key, Composer correctly kept the "staff focus" if a note or other music object was selected in a staff. That is, Composer turns to the next or previous page, and keeps the staff scrolled to the same vertical position in the window. Composer now also keeps the staff focus if a region is selected, such as with CTRL+Drag, and as is indicated with a gray background.
  • Dynamic Marks. The dynamic mark text names "cresc." and "dim." were incorrectly displayed using the Harmony music font symbols rather than in text.
  • Drum Symbols. Special drum symbols, such as for rim shots and brushes, were missing in the installed Harmony music font.
  • Playback. (1) If a pair of notes in upper and lower voice shared the same pitch at the same location, then during playback the note was not turned off; that is, it became a stuck note. (2) If the muting of a staff was changed during playback, then pan and channel volume level of all of the staves were incorrectly reset to default values.
  • Staff Editing. The "qds" shortcut for "quick delete staff" was missing.
1.1.3
  • Import MIDI File. MidiNotate Composer version 1.1.2 incorrectly imported MIDI files of Type 0. Most MIDI files are of Type 1; so this bug affected only some MIDI files. The symptom of the bug is that notes are assigned to wrong staves.
