If you are not able to find and import a MIDI Device Description (.mdd) file or Cakewalk Instrument Description (.ins) file for your MIDI keyboard or sound module, then you might find it necessary to manually enter MIDI patch (sound) names for your device, as described in Configuring a New External Sound Module. This requires a lot of effort. If you reinstall Composer on a different computer at your home, you will probably will not want to do it again. Instead, you can export the description of your device to a MIDI Device Description (.mdd) file from Composer running on your first computer, and then import the MIDI Device Description (.mdd) file into Composer running on your second computer.

The MIDI Device Description (.mdd) file can also be used for sharing device descriptions among different users of Composer. We highly encourage this. If you have spent the effort to enter patch (sound) names for your device, we hope that you will consider sharing this information with other users of Composer. You can do this by exporting your device description to an .mdd file, and sending it as an email file attachment to support@notation.com. Please include in the subject line of the email the name of your device and "MDD file", such as "Korg M1 MDD file". Such .mdd files contributed by users of Composer are published at:

The format of the .mdd file is defined by Notation Software. Other music software companies are welcome to use this file format, and to refer users of their music software programs to the .mdd files available at our web site.
