Dividing and Combining Rests Eliminating Small Rests

Using Rests to Erase Notes

You can use rests to erase portions of notes, or entire notes.

Generate/prcarrow.gif To use a rest to erase the beginning of some portion of a note or chord:

1.      Type SHIFT+R to show the Rest Palette.

2.      Decide how much of the beginning the note you want to erase, and select that duration in the Rest Palette.

3.      Click the mouse at the location of the beginning of the note or chord.

For example, suppose you choose an eighth rest and click the mouse on the half-note chord here:

Composer will replace the beginning of the half-note chord with an eighth rest, leaving a remainder dotted quarter note chord:

Generate/prcarrow.gif To use a rest to erase the end of a note or chord:

Generate/B816.gif      After selecting the rest duration in the Rest Palette, click the mouse at end of the note or chord, as illustrated here:

Generate/prcarrow.gif To completely erase a note or chord with a rest:

1.      Type SHIFT+R to show the Rest Palette.

2.      Select a rest value that is at least as large as the note you wish to erase.

3.      Click the mouse at the location of the beginning of the note or chord.

Keep in mind that the rest will replace any notes that span its duration, not just the first note or chord where you add the rest.

Generate/prcarrow.gif To erase part or all of two or more notes at the same time:

1.      From the Rest Palette, choose a rest duration equal to the total span of the note duration that you wish to erase.

2.      Using the Beat Ruler, click the to-be-added rest where you wish the erasure to begin (perhaps the middle part of the duration of the first note), as illustrated here:
